Real Madrid secure Keylor Navas signing

Spanish giants Real Madrid have beaten German champions Bayern Munich to the signing of Costa Rica goalkeeper Kelor Navas following his outstanding displays as the minnows reached the quarter finals in the World Cup.

The Costa Rican international goalkeeper was shortlisted for the Golden Glove award along with Sergio Romero of Argentina and eventual winner Manuel Neuer of Germany. He was one of the finest shot stoppers in the tournament and it was his displays in goal that proved pivotal as Costa Rica stunned Italy and Uruguay before holding England for a draw to progress into the second round from the Group of Death. Who’s going to win the World Cup?

If anyone had asked you a few weeks ago who was going to win this year’s World Cup, you might well have said Brazil, perhaps Spain – or maybe even Argentina? And you might well have been right. After all, it’s early days yet and the team that wins this competition is usually the one that’s playing the best football at the end of the tournament, rather than the start of it.

If you think back to the last World Cup in South Africa 2010, Spain lost their opening game to Switzerland – a capable side indeed but hardly one to match the giants of world football. Of course, we all know what happened after that; Spain stormed through all before them, ultimately ending the tournament as convincing winners, in what was quite a disappointing final against the Dutch who played what was, for them, an uncharacteristically cynical game. HANDANOVIC MAN OF THE MATCH

Samir Handanovic was named as the man of the match during Inter Milan’s triumph against Sampdoria as they played a few days ago and the Slovenian goalkeeper maintained a clean sheet by denying Maxi Lopez from scoring a penalty set-piece and had a busy evening throughout the entire match.

Inter Milan is working hard trying to secure a spot in Serie A which would allow them to compete in the Europa League for the upcoming season. Their victory against Sampdoria was crucial for them to continue fighting for Europa League dreams but Handanovic announced that there still is a lot of work left to do and he does not feel like the victory has placed them closer to their objectives. SCOLARI SLAMS BARCA

Brazil’s national team manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has criticised Barcelona’s use of star striker Neymar. Despite being signed in what could turn out to be the world record transfer fee, Neymar has not been played in his favourite position. At his previous clubs and also for the national team, Neymar place on the left of a three-man striking force. However, Gerardo Martino has been utilising the young striker on the right way to the left being favoured by either Andres Iniesta or some of the youngsters. After starting his Barcelona career in excellent fashion, Neymar has been looking off colour in recent weeks.

Scolari, who regards Neymar as one of the finest talent he has ever managed, says that the club are not getting the best out of the 21-year-old. Neymar proved his worth by scoring the equaliser in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. He was found by an excellent ball from Iniesta and he slotted home from the left. Scolari has also criticised the Spanish media by saying that they have been too critical of Neymar. The striker has been signed for a reported £ 86 million and his wages would potentially makes him the highest transfer in world football.

He has been constantly compared with Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale.

“Neymar hasn’t shone at Barca because they play different to what he is used to. He’s better when he has space, but Barcelona have him playing on the right. The Spanish press has one opinion about Neymar and the Brazilian press has another. For the national team he’s a special player and he plays in a different way to how he does at Barca. This can be Neymar’s World Cup, we can be sure of that,” said Scolari, who is making Brazil one of the best in the world again.

BARCA FACE CITY

Barcelona will be taking on Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 stage of the season. It is already one of the most awaited fixtures, as the latter have been doing extremely well in the Premier league under the guidance of Manuel Pellegrini. Even though they have not entered into the stage of the Champions League in their history, Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino has said that he respects the Premier league outfit hugely. City have spent in excess of £ 700 million in improving the squad over the last few years.

As a result, they have some of the best players in the world like Sergio Aguero and Yaya Touré. Martino says that his team will not be taking City lightly since they have the capability to hurt any team in the world. The first leg will be at the Etihad stadium followed by the second leg at the Camp Nou. This gives Barcelona a slight advantage after having finished top of their group. The Catalan club remain as one of the most prestigious in this tournament after having won the title four times in their history. City, meanwhile, are only looking for their first win.

Martino has pointed out to the recent history of Barcelona in this competition. The Spanish club have made it to the semi-finals in the last six seasons.

“For the last six seasons Barcelona have made it to the semis and the fans are used to it. It will be difficult to understand if we don’t go through but it is the tightest tie of all. I don’t think City are a mini-Barcelona or a mini-any-team. I think they are one of the greatest teams in the world. They have great Spanish players like [Jesús] Navas, who plays very vertically, [David] Silva who knows when to pass and when to cross. But it is not only Spanish players,” said Martino.
