FIFA BACK CURITIBIA

FIFA has confirmed that Curitiba will remain as one of the stadiums set to host important matches at the upcoming World Cup. It was heavily expected that FIFA would drop the stadium from the list of host cities, as they have failed to comply with the December 31 deadline to hand over the stadiums to FIFA.

Brazil has been suffering from huge delays even with basic aspects like stadium completion. Further attributes like transport and infrastructure still remain inadequate to handle the amount of fans expected to arrive in Brazil in June. Read more “FIFA BACK CURITIBIA”

DEFEAT HURTS

Barcelona suffered their first home defeat since April 2012 after a 3-2 loss at the hands of Valencia. This was despite the home team taking the lead very early on in the match. The setback has also been followed by the news that Barcelona have dropped to second in the table due to Atletico Madrid winning their match in hand.

Real Madrid have also closed the gap to Barcelona to just goal difference. This has increased pressure on manager Gerardo Martino, who has stated that Barcelona will return to winning ways in the Copa del Rey match against Real Sociedad. Read more “DEFEAT HURTS”

XAVI WANTS BARCA STAY

The veteran midfielder of Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez said he would like to end his career in Barcelona but is not so sure if it will happen.

“It’s difficult to finish your career here. I don’t know if I will end it at Barca. I’d like to, but I don’t know what will happen.

“I feel good physically, better even than in the last two seasons. I don’t want to miss any games and sometimes that can affect you. I have to give myself a little bit more rest now. I am happy playing for Barca because of our philosophy. Perhaps I could have been happy playing for another club, I don’t know, but my priority has always been Barca.” Xavi said.

Xavi Hernandez spoke about the possibility of becoming a coach and while he did not confirm any intentions of taking charge of a club, he did state that even when he has already retired, he would like to continue being linked and close to football in some way or another.

“I don’t know if I will be a coach because I am still playing and I haven’t stopped to think about it yet,” he added. “But I like football a lot and I will stay linked to it. What on earth would I do otherwise – become an economist?”

While Xavi is nearing the end of his career and might be leaving Barcelona in a few season, Juan Mata on the other hand might be joining the Catalan club.

Juan Mata’s situation in Chelsea is dreadful as Mourinho does not consider him to be a regular starter for the Premier League club and has already told the Spanish midfielder that the door is wide open for him to leave.

The agent of Mata revealed that he has offered the playmaker to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Napoli as those are some of the clubs that Juan Mata is most interested in joining if he indeed decides to leave Chelsea.

UNBEATEN RUN CONTINUES

Barcelona will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in the league when they take on Real Betis on Sunday. Their main title rivals Real Madrid won their match this weekend in style after a 5-1 thrashing of Real Sociedad. This has put a little pressure on Barcelona to take three points. Lionel Messi is also under pressure to score his first goal in the league after a long time. The Argentine superstar has not scored in the last four league matches. Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino has revealed that this will not be an easy match for them.

Even though Real Betis are bottom of the table, he expects the home team to put a strong fight in the match. The home team have won just two matches all season long and are rooted to the bottom of the table. Martino has confirmed that two main players – Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets – will not be involved for Barcelona. Pique has been left home, while Busquets will be left out of this match in order to rest him. These absences may mean that former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song may get an opportunity to impress in the middle of the park.

The Cameroon international has seen very little first-team action since moving to Barcelona.

“I expect Betis to come out for us, especially playing at home. They have some great players, and although their league results haven’t been too good, they’re doing well in Europe. We expect a very difficult match. Betis are dangerous because they’re a good team. Their league position doesn’t matter. Whoever saw how they played against Madrid in the first match knows they have a good team. I have a high opinion of Song,” said Martino ahead of the match.

Barcelona also have to worry about Atletico Madrid, who are very close to them in the table.

MARTINO TAKES OVER

Barcelona recently appointed Gerardo Martino as the replacement for Tito Vilanova, who had to step down from his managerial job due to the difficulties from his cancer treatment resurfacing once again. Vilanova missed large chunks of last season due to cancer treatment, and a reappearance of the disease has meant that he would have had to do the same this season as well. Barcelona were not at their imperious best last campaign and it was primarily due to the constant changing of managers. Barcelona decided to hand over the duties to assistant manager Roura when Vilanova was absent.

Barcelona only managed to win the league title last campaign, but it was largely viewed as a hollow victory because it was mainly down to the lack of a challenge from Real Madrid. During the Guardiola era, Barcelona were one of the strongest teams in the world. The decimated their opponents by playing a style of football that was so intense. Defender Dani Alves has said that the club is close to recapturing that intensity under the regime of Martino, who has been overseeing the training in the last few weeks.

Barcelona also recently brought in Brazilian striker Neymar from Santos for around £ 50 million. He is expected to reduce the burden on Lionel Messi.

“Tata Martino is a good coach. He’s given us that intensity that we perhaps lost over the years. With this spirit we will once again be able to do great things. The fans can get excited about this team because the players are ready to give it their all,” said the Brazilian defender on the official site of Barcelona. Barcelona recently managed to win 8-0 against Brazilian club Santos in a friendly match. They will be playing against Levante in the opening game of the season at home.

SILVA LINKED TO BARCA

Brazil defender Thiago Silva is regarded as one of the best centre backs in the world. He only recently moved to French club PSG in a world record transfer fee – for the defender – of £ 35 million. He has now been linked with a move to Spanish football with Catalan club Barcelona heavily interested in securing his services. Thiago Silva’s agent has done nothing to quash rumours by admitting that his client would be happy to play for a club like Barcelona. However, he has said that the potential transfer will prove true only Barcelona come with a concrete offer.

Such a transfer would be disastrous for the image of PSG after the only recently lost manager Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid. They have been looking to sign players like Napoli’s Edinson Cavani in order to make a statement of intent. Silva’s agent has also praised the Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova by saying that he is one of the best in the world. Barcelona failed to win the Champions League last season, but they lifted the league title from the clutches of Real Madrid.

One of the main reasons for Barcelona’s failures last season was the lack of depth and strength in the central defence.

“Tito is an excellent coach, and someone I really admire. After the game in the Champions League we had a brief chat and he asked me to go and play for his side. There are no negotiations. In football you never know what’s going to happen, but I’m happy at PSG, I’m very relaxed there. I speak with the president nearly every day and it’ll be very difficult for me to leave,” said the defender’s agent.

Silva played against Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season and he almost knocked them out.
